David and Laura Thomas originally founded Ladamas Arabians as El Ladamas Arabians in the 1970's. Laura had always been "horse crazy" and dreamed of one day owning an Arabian. While looking to fulfill Laura's dream and finding a place to keep it, David fell under the spell of the Arabian when a grey filly with huge soft eyes and little hooked ears chose him as her owner.
The Filly
The filly was Blue Sophia (Beau Blu x Ga-Kay). Laura trained and showed Blue Sophia. In doing pedigree research on Blue Sophia, Laura became interested in the Spanish bloodlines. Eventually, they purchased a grey straight Spanish mare named Damelita. Laura also bred Blue Sophia to the imported Spanish stallion *Cypres. The breeding resulted in beautiful bay filly (La Azur Cypres, aka Trouble). The filly had a successful career as both a halter and western pleasure champion. La Azur Cypres earned a Legion of Honor title and retired from the show ring at the age of 8 to be a pleasure horse and foxhunter. The years flew by and Laura suddenly realized that Trouble was 16 and had not been bred. In wanting to keep older bloodlines close, Laura chose Que Seraj as the first stallion for Trouble. The resulting 2001 foal was a colt/gelding named Azur Seraj LA.
The Past
2001 was a busy year for Laura and David. They found and settled on their "retirement farm" in Fauquier County close to Warrenton, VA; re-established Ladamas Arabians, and said "Good-bye" to Blue Sophia due to old age and cancer. Laura in 2002 again turned to Dr. Aldred and Rollingwood Farm for breeding Trouble this time to their young Crabbet stallion RF Perseus. The resulting foal was a beautiful bay filly (Blue Sophia LA) who was named for her granddam. Laura also bred their 14-year old Spanish mare Damelita to Boomerang NA. The resulting foal was a grey colt/gelding named Spanish Sonnet LA (aka Sonny). Sonny had a rocky start in life, but proved that "beautiful swans" do come from "ugly ducklings". Sonny made his debut in the show ring in 2005 by being named Region 15 Sweepstakes 2 Year Old Gelding Champion. It had been the unanimous decision of a three-judge panel. Sonny followed his win a month later by being named Reserve East Coast Champion Gelding. He closed the year in September by being named US Sport Horse National Top Ten 2 Yr Old In-Hand Jackpot Gelding. He was actually 6/10th of a point behind the Reserve Champion Gelding.
The Present
On March 24, 2005, La Azur Cypres + (then 21) delivered her last foal by an even older stallion GS Khochise +++//. The foal was a showy and sporty bay filly, named Khorvette LA. Following this foal, she retired to a position of "lawn ornament" and official farm welcomer.
In 2006, her first daughter (Blue Sophia LA) left the show ring to become a broodmare. She was bred to straight Egyptian world champion *Al Lahab GASB. In February 2007, Blue Sophia LA delivered a beautiful grey filly. Following in the tradition of naming the first filly for the granddam, the filly was named Thee Blue Cypres LA.
The Arabians of Ladamas Arabians are bred for correctness, temperament, and capabilities both in the show ring and as life-long companions. |
